During pregnancy, the most weight falls on your waist. In such a situation, to avoid the problem of back pain, avoid sitting for a long time. If your job is to sit for a long time, then sit with your feet on the stool. If you are working and you have to sit and work all day, then definitely put a pillow behind your waist.
The good news is that a lot can be done to relieve back pain and prevent the condition from becoming severe. Some women suffering from back pain before getting pregnant even found that they got relief from the pain as their pregnancy progressed.
What causes back and back pain during pregnancy?
Your bones and joints are connected by hard tissues called ligaments. A hormone called relaxin causes your ligaments to relax during pregnancy. The relaxin hormone is at its peak between 10 and 14 weeks of pregnancy.
If you have back pain early in pregnancy, it may be due to the hormone relaxin. Lower back pain is common in the first trimester.
As you enter the second and third trimesters, your growing baby's weight and growing belly put more pressure on the ligaments and muscles.
Your abdominal muscles also start to stretch. Because of which now they will not be able to bear your weight as firmly as before. This now puts more pressure on your lower back.
Your center of gravity also changes during pregnancy and due to this the position also changes. This can also cause back pain.
If you are overweight or do not exercise regularly, you are more likely to develop lower back pain during pregnancy.
A severe deficiency of vitamin D can also cause back pain.
If you've had low back or pelvic pain before, it's more likely to happen in pregnancy. Doing too much physical exertion can also make the pain worse.
What are the symptoms of back pain during pregnancy?
You will probably feel pain in the area where your lower back and pelvic region meet. In such a situation, you can also consider it as a pain in the pelvic area instead of back pain. It is therefore appropriate to divide this type of pain into two categories:
lower back pain. This pain is mild and is felt on bending forward. Because of this, you are not able to move the lower or lumbar part of the spine much. If you press on some of the back muscles, you will feel pain.
Pelvic girdle pain (pelvic girdle pain - PGP). It is caused by loose ligaments and joints in the pelvic region. You may feel pain in the back side of the pelvis, where the seed joint of your hip bone and lower spine is located. This joint is called the sacroiliac joint. This pain may feel very sharp, mild or burning which keeps on coming and going. PGP can also spread to the back of your thighs. If you feel pain in or around the pubic bone at the front, it could be symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD). It is a variant of PGP itself.
If you think you have pelvic girdle pain or if you have severe back pain, talk to your doctor. They may advise you to see a physiotherapist. The physiotherapist will find out whether you have back pain or a PGP or both. Based on this, she will decide her therapy and will tell you such strengthening exercises, which you can do at home. Back pain can make it difficult to do the following daily activities:
get up from a sitting position
turning in bed
put on or take off
long walk
lifting and carrying low weights
